The death of John Frederick Unstead in 1965 severed a link going right back to A. J. Herbertson, who taught Unstead, and Halford Mackinder.
He seems to have had a very early introduction to geography teaching. His role was taken by a lady who will receive her own blog post next week, as we move towards a significant date in the history of the Association: the HQ move to Fulwood Road.
He was influenced by Mackinder to switch to geography from history (a very wise choice). He also tried new teaching methods, so a maverick in the tradition of Jenkins, Cassidy and Rogers. He became the Correspondence Secretary of the GA in the early part of the 20th century.
He held other roles in the GA, including the Vice Presidency.
As with many of the people around this time, it would be great to be able to source an image of John Unstead.
