Professor J. H. Paterson is Professor of Geography in the University of Leicester. This article is based
on the lecture he delivered to the Joint Annual Meeting of the Geographical Association, the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of British Geographers on 18th April, 1979, during the Annual Conference of the Geographical Association.
